The first post

well here goes, since this was my first post i thought i will write about something which is very close to my heart: football. disgressing a little from the topic(already) i would like to say that i do not believe in God. The whole concept of a superior being and his controlling our lives doesnt hold much water with me. But if theres any thing which will ever make me believe in god, fold my hands in thankfulness and look with my eyes closed towards the skies it will be football. You may think this is a freakonomics type of assertion, well in the freakonomics way let me prove that to you. Well for all those people who do not follow football, uefa champions league is a club tournament, where top teams from all around europe compete with each other. This season's final was between chelsea and manchester united two teams who had battled with each other for the english league crown as well. Both had men at helm who were a sharp contrast of each other. Sir alex ferguson had just won his 10th premier league title but it was always his dream to add to the single european triumph way back in 1999(another god proving moment). On the other hand there was Avram grant who had been handed the job mid season and inspite of a lot of reasons had got chelsea where his much more charismatic predecessor had not been able to get(the champions league final). While alex ferguson was loved by his fans avram grant was despised by his club fans. So these two teams met and battled for 120 minutes  and the match went down to that cruel separator of teams- Penalty shoot out. The first two penalties went in from each side. Up stepped the arrogant but vastly talented Christiano ronaldo who had scored 41 goals in the season and had added to that in the current game , and his penalty was saved. All the other guys scored their goals and at 4-4 terry had the chance to win chelsea the game.A lil background on john terry. He is a ferocious defender and personalises all the qualities which had brought chelsea to this stage. He had got a shoulder fracture 10 days before the final but there was nothing which could keep him away from here. He had also saved a certain goal by ryan giggs in extra time. And he is also called Mr. Chelsea. He stepped up, ran to take up the penalty and then slipped and missed his penalty kick. Let me confess i am a manchester united fan but still if i could have had anyone to win the champions league for chelsea i would have picked terry. Manchester united went on to win the match. As soon as Nicolas anelka's penalty was saved, the arrogant ronaldo started crying his heart out, and mr chelsea was inconsolable. And alex ferguson had won another european cup when it was raining.Ryan giggs who on that day had broken sir bobby charlton's record of 758 appearances for manu had scored the winning penalty Only a higher being could have written such a script. Probability of all of this happening on the same day would be miniscule.Perhaps more days of these and i will accept his existence.
On an ending note i would like to say last night John terry scored for England in a friendly against USA.It was almost as if God was saying "there is redemption for all of us".

  2. Like I had promised(in the previous comment), I read siddharth's first post as soon as I could.

What a start !! I must say. I had not seen the game(or read about it) for some reasons that now I wish never existed.

The emotions that every single person might have felt watching the Champion League Finals 2008, could have only been evoked during a game of football. Thanks to you Sid, I just felt them :)

PS: There is no God. Its just that when something is going wrong; and you don't want it to; but your not wanting is not enough to save things - you wish there was one, to change things around, to make Terry slip, to make Giggs score.

  3. Indeed Champions league is the epitome of football at its best. And this times final was no less absorbing. And about God or luck as somewhat would call it had its part to play..just imagine terry had the chance to seal it after playin his heart out for 120 min ..nd he misses...nd then ryan giggs scoring the winner...unbelievable or massively improbable...when such things happen you look up and think about things like destiny and god..

  5. Come on now Mathew. You of all people talking about destiny and stuff like that. Yak!!
Its just the way football is. Seriously guys, stop calling the game in question - 'unbelievable' or 'massively improbable' or 'destined'. Thats just undermining football itself.
